Tips for a Tidy Home

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Charles Kassotis Dont you love coming home to a clean house? Whether you live in a two-room apartment or a sprawling ranch, the air just feels fresher when the place is clean and neat. Although some busy folks hire a housekeeping service to come in every week or two to make things right, most of us fend for ourselves and bravely tackle the dirtiest household chores when we cant bear the grime any longer. Cleaning your home doesnt have to be a dreaded task, however. With a few arrangements ahead of time, you can be ready to go and get the work done in no time flat. All it takes is a little bit of organization and preparation, and you can whisk through those weekly duties pronto. 1. Stock cleaning supplies. Use the most natural and non-toxic products you can find. Or consider making your own. Clean the toilet bowls with Alka Seltzer, for example, by tossing in a couple of tablets, letting them fizz for an hour so, and then scrubbing the bowl to remove lingering debris. For counter space and bathroom fixtures, use a paste made of baking soda and water and apply it like cleanser. Rinse each surface thoroughly, and you will be surprised to see how effectively this works. Try a half-cut of vinegar following by a cup of hot water to clear a clogged drain. You can find many types of homemade cleaners and fresheners that will save money and cut fumes as well as protect your household materials. 2. Get organized. Keep all supplies and cleaning equipment in a specific area so you can find them when needed. Wash or replace cleaning rags, and dont forget to buy paper towels. Replace your mop head and broom every three to six months, or as needed, to keep these tools working effectively. Choose a certain time slot and try to follow it each week for doing the general cleaning. For example, this could be Thursday evening, Saturday morning, or another time when you can get the housework done without interruption. 3. Work efficiently. Start at one end of the housethe one furthest from the centerand work your way back. Put a clothesbasket or paper bag in each room to receive items that need to be moved to another area, such as discarded newspapers, shoes, or dishes. Train the kids to return items like these to their proper locations at the end of each day. 4. Go light to heavy. Start with dusting, wiping, or surface tasks first. Then move on to the sweeping, vacuuming, or mopping, as well as windows or other heavy-duty tasks that remain to be done. Open the windows, weather permitting, to bring in fresh air and let out contaminated air. Youll love the fresh scent unless you live in a heavily polluted area. 5. Clean up thoroughly. Put everything away where it belongs, cleaning supplies included. Pick up magazines, toys, and other discarded items. Place fresh-cut flowers in a vase on the table, or bake muffins for supper. The delicious aroma will add to the wonderful clean feeling of your home. Make a habit of keeping the house tidy each day. Put things where they belong. Do the dishes after each meal. Put away groceries when you return from the store. Then you wont have as much to do when cleaning day rolls around. An Introduction to Reiki

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Peter Tremayne Reiki is a Japanese spiritual practice that is used for treating a number of different diseases. These diseases can be emotional, mental, or physical. The practice was first created in the 20th century by Mikao Usui. His followers said that after a few weeks of fasting, he acquired the ability to heal without losing any of his energy. When Reiki is performed, the practitioners believe that by laying on of the hands, they will be able to access channels of energy. This energy is called “Ki.” These practitioners say that they will be given guidance by spirits that are called “Rei,” and it is these two terms that give the practice its name. Since its introduction, Reiki has a gained a certain level of popularity in the United States. Statistics from 2002 show that over 1 million Americans used Reiki treatments. The practice has receive controversy from the scientific and medical establishment, who claim that there is no concrete evidence that the treatments are effective. However, some doctors have said that it may have a placebo effect on those who use it. The two characters that are used to describe Reiki are Chinese, and are believed to define energy. Many people who use Reiki choose to use the expression spiritual healing instead of faith, because they do not believe that faith is required in order for the practice to work. Reiki has been broken down into a number of different schools. Some schools teach that the energy will enter the body through what is called the 7th chakra. After this it will travel through the 4th chakra, and it will move through the hands, and from this point it will flow into the body. At the same time, some schools teach that the energy will enter the body through the spine. According to the teachings of Reiki, the energy is intelligent. It knows what must be done, and it knows where the body needs it. It is also said that the recipient must accept energy if they want their bodies to absorb it. During the typical Reiki treatment, the patient will be asked to lie down. Once they are lying down, they must relax. It is the practitioner who will act as a channel for the energy, and this energy will be guided towards the patient. The practitioner will do this by placing their hands near or on the body. It has been said that the patients will feel a number of sensations, and some of these are heat, pressure, or cold. Adherents of Reiki say that these feelings are a result of the energy filling up areas of the body that are low in energy. The energies will be open, and negativity will be pulled out. Despite the controversy that Reiki has caused in the medical establishment, a number of medical journals have confirmed that the treatments from Reiki have been useful. Some of the benefits of Reiki include a lower heart rate, high levels of immunity, and relaxation. In addition to this, the blood pressure rates of patients were improved as well. Some reports have even found that mice infected with cancer cells were treated successfully by Reiki. 6 Free Beauty Tips: Hair

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Mike Jones Use these 6 free beauty tips to make your hair care that much easier: 1. Test the strength of your hair by pulling a strand taut between your fingers. If it snaps easily it has probably been damaged. Be cautious with the use of hair dryers and heating appliances and use a heat-protective product first. 2. For a light, natural looking finish when using hair spray on fine hair, apply the hair spray to the hairbrush, then brush through the hair thus ensuring even distribution. 3. Use a range of volumizing products to build volume into fine, flyaway hair. A volumizing shampoo can do so much, but using a volumizing shampoo, conditioner and styling spray can make a huge difference. 4. Avoid hair frizzing by not brushing your hair when wet. Only use the brush when your hair is somewhere between damp and dry. Then use the blow dryer and a round brush until it is styled and completely dry. 5. To get the maximum effect from hair conditioner, be sure to leave it on the hair for the required time. As it can be difficult to approximate how many minutes, try and have a clock visible so a full 5 minutes is given for the ingredients in the conditioner to do their work. It is also important to work the conditioner well into the hair, almost like giving yourself a head massage. To get good results the product must come in contact with the hair itself. 6. When blow-drying the hair, divide the hair into three or four sections. Clip unwanted sections out of the way to allow you to concentrate on one section at a time. Trying to cope with the whole head at once can be difficult. Mike Jones is a writer and webmaster with over 10 years experience. FAQ About The ACT

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Deanna Mascle Many future college students understand they will need to take the ACT to gain admission to college but are left with many questions about the ACT. One of the top questions is about the difference between the ACT and SAT. The ACT is an achievement test that measures what a student has learned in school. The SAT is an aptitude test that tests reasoning and verbal abilities. The ACT has up to 5 components including English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. The SAT has three components: Verbal, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test. Many students also want to know when they should take the ACT. Students should test at least two months ahead of the application deadlines of all the colleges and scholarship agencies where they intend to apply. It typically takes four to eight weeks after a test date to receive score reports. However, there are advantages to testing earlier (as much as one year earlier, such as during the junior year in high school). This can allow retesting if results are lower than necessary or performance can be improved. It will also allow time for further study and preparation if necessary to raise scores. Another advantage to earlier testing is that colleges and scholarship programs will have access to your interests and scores in time to contact you early on about admissions, course placement, scholarships, and special programs. Future college applicants frequently question whether or not it is to their advantage to retake the ACT. The answer to this question varies upon circumstances and individuals. Obviously if outside factors, such as illness or personal problems, were a distraction or problem on the test date then retesting after these have been resolved can be beneficial. Similarly, if additional study or practice is expected to raise scores then retesting can also be a good idea. ACT research shows that of the students who took the ACT more than once 55% increased their Composite score; however 23% decreased their Composite score. So obviously simply retesting is a bit of a gamble. Once the actual test is over then most students want to know when they can view their scores. ACT scores can be viewed online. During the early viewing period, normally for about two weeks after scores are first available to view, an $8 fee will apply. The official score report will arrive by mail. Once students have their scores in hand, their question is what does the score mean. The highest possible ACT score is 36. The required ACT score for admission will vary from college to college as well as among individual school programs. If you are not sure which college you intend to apply then it might be useful to look at national rankings for your score. For example, the national rank for a Composite score of 22 is 64. This means 64 percent of recent high school graduates who took the ACT Assessment achieved a Composite score of 22 or below. However, only 99 percent achieved 32 or higher. The ACT organization offers a complete ranking chart on its web site to help you determine how your score ranks. Taking the ACT and properly utilizing your ACT score is a major step toward achieving your future goals and dreams. Being informed about the ACT can help you achieve those goals and reach your dreams. Deanna Mascle writes about many college, learning and education topics. Venture Capital Firms

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Damian Sofsian While the terms and conditions of venture capital are not standardized, there are some salient features of venture capital arrangements. The venture capital firm is inclined to assume a high degree of risk in the expectation of earning a high rate of return. The venture capital firm, in addition to providing funds, takes an active interest in guiding the assisted firm. The financial burden for the assisted firm tends to be negligible in the first few years. The venture capital firm normally plans to liquidate its investment in the assisted firm after 3 to 5 years. Typically, the promoter of the assisted firm is given the first option to acquire the equity investment held by the venture capital firm. Venture capital firms can raise funds from different sources. The important long-term sources of finance are issue of equity shares and preference shares, issue of debentures of different types, raising of term loans from financial institutions and generation of reserves. Venture capital firms may use different combinations of these sources by considering their relative cost and availability and their impact on the value of the firm. Accordingly, a company can have patterns of capital structure such as equity shares only, equity shares and preference shares, equity shares and debentures, equity shares and preference shares reserves, equity shares and preference shares debentures, equity shares and preference shares/debentures reserves. The capital structure of venture capital firms is influenced by number of factors such as trading on equity, growth and stability of sales. Trading on equity means the use of long-term, fixed interest bearing sources of finance along with equity capital. Adopting trading on equity can increase the return on equity. However, this is possible only when the return on investment is more than the cost of finance. Battle The Holiday Bulge (And Win)

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Dianne Villano How to Keep Yourself From Starting The New Year As Round As Santa Okay, here it is part 3 of our Battling The Holiday Bulge (and winning) series. The Average American gains 7 - 12 pounds between Halloween and New Years and studies show that most will abandon their fitness programs. Yes, I know, I’ve already said this but it bears repeating. Between the parties, high fat foods, alcohol and hectic schedules who has the time (or the inclination for that matter) to worry about exercise, never mind healthy eating? Most people are busy putting off their healthy eating and exercise programs “until the 1st of the year.” That is, until they try to get into their clothes or get a good look in the department store mirror. There is still time to formulate a plan that will have you closer to the fitness goals on the first of the year instead of looking at an extra 7-12 pounds of ugly fat. These easy tips will help you get through the holidays with a minimum of stress and weight gain. If you missed parts one & two, drop me an e mail at dianne@custombodiestampabay.com and I will be happy to send them to you. 1.Don’t try to diet during the holidays- Set a goal of trying to maintain your present weight. This way, you have a realistic goal. Since , as I have previously mentioned, the Average American gains 7-12 pounds, you will still be ahead of the game. You can allow yourself to indulge here and there, but you wont go over the edge 2.Pay attention to how quickly you eat and exactly what you eat and drink- Chew your food slowly and focus on your companions and the social aspects of each event 3.Remember that alcohol is packed with calories - Choose light beer and wine over mixed drinks.” A holiday-sized mixed drink can have as many a 300- 500 calories or more. 4.Offer to bring a favorite low-calorie dish to holiday parties, so you know there will be at least one “safe” item 5.Make the effort to continue a regular exercise program Find a buddy or consult with a professional to help you keep yourself on track. Aim for 2 3 30 minutes sessions per week (remember - a little bit is better than none) 6.Never go to a party or event on an empty stomach- Before going out, snack on protein, like chicken or cottage cheese. Protein satisfies and will help you eat less 7.Keep an eye on your portion sizes - In the heat of celebration, portion sizes can be quite excessive 8.Dont Skip Meals Many people think that if they skip breakfast and lunch, that they can save enough calories for later. This almost always leads to binging 9.Don’t let a hectic holiday schedule force you to eat fast food - Prepare and freeze several quick, healthy meals. That way, you have an option other than high-fat, fast-food meals. 10.Remember what the Holidays are about Focus on friends and family. Although most holiday events focus around food, the point is to enjoy the company of your friends and family not to see how much dessert you can eat before you actually pop the buttons on your pants (or dress) 11.Avoid Tasting While Cooking You will be appalled at how quickly the calories add up Get a family member to taste the food for you Dianne Villano is the president of CUSTOM BODIES which has been serving the Tampa Bay with fatloss and body shaping programs since 1996. Generate Website Traffic With Postcards

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Bob Leduc Promoting your website is getting more difficult these days. New marketing tactics come and go fast. They work for a while then quickly fade away. Just keeping up with the changes can be a full time job. Here’s a proven way you can generate lots of traffic to your website …one that hasn’t faded away. In fact, it actually works better now than ever before - and you probably haven’t even tried it. What is it? Go offline and promote your website with postcards. But, you say, “I’m an internet marketer, not a direct mail marketer.” Right, and so are most of your competitors. That’s why they don’t market with postcards …and why most of them are not likely to try postcards anytime soon. You won’t have much competition. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why postcards work so well for internet marketers. It Costs Less than You Think The cost for printing postcards starts at just a few cents each, depending on how you print them. And you can send postcards by First Class Mail in the US for just 26 cents each if you keep them between 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 inches high and between 5 to 6 inches wide. OK. So you’re ready to give postcards a try. But where do you begin? 1. Start with the Mailing List You’ll get a good response to your postcards if you send them to prospects already interested in what you offer. You’ll get an even better response if those prospects also have a proven history of acting on offers they receive. For example, get a list of prospects who previously requested information (or actually bought) something similar to what you sell - or a list of paid subscribers to a publication targeting the same interests that make them good prospects for what you sell. You can get these and other similar lists from most mailing list brokers. 2. Don’t Forget Why You’re Mailing Postcards The purpose of your postcards is to get the readers to visit your website (take an action). It’s not to close a sale for money (make a purchase). Postcards are too small to be effective at closing sales. Closing sales is what your website is designed to do. 3. Decide What to Say on Your Postcard You don’t need to come up with a strategy to persuade people to read your postcard. It will be delivered with the message exposed and ready to read. So get right to the point. Don’t focus on your product or service. Instead, spotlight the major benefits your product or service provides. That will arouse the reader’s interest and motivate them to find out more about those benefits …by going to your website. Tip: Offer a bonus to those who visit your site before a specific deadline. It will boost the response. That’s it. Just 3 simple steps. Try it. You’ll discover a profitable way to generate lots of website traffic - one you can use for many years to come. Importance of Knife Sharpening

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

By Vince K. Paxton Knife sharpening has always been one of the most important parts of tool maintenance, even dating back to the when the first primitive tool was made. In Colonial times, a grist mill was many times the first building to be set up when a new settlement was formed. This is because pioneers knew that without sharp tools, the building processed would be a very slow process. Sharpening tools today are based on the same physics as the old grist mills and whet stones but a little more advanced and with a lot power. For instance, grinding wheels once powered by water wheels are now zapped with electricity to speed up the sharpening process dramatically. It now takes only a fraction of the time to properly sharpen its tools. A knife sharpener can come in several forms. The bench top grinder, for example, is good for sharpening axe blades and gardening tools. It is important to keep your tools sharp for purposes of quality and safety. Chain saws need to be sharpened often to ensure a quality cut and, consequently, greater safety when cutting. An abrasive end to a long drill-bit attachment is inserted into the drill and tightened, and the drill quickly rotates the end as the saw blade is held against it. When choosing the best sharpener for your chain saw, look for a sharpener that comes with multiple tips since the tips will wear out quickly. Tormek manufacturers a knife and scissor sharpener that is a bench top grinder with water which helps to reduce friction. The grinder comes with a complete package including a leather strop, though some users recommend a paper wheel to hone and stop the edges of the knife. Versatility is the most important item to look for in a knife sharpener. It should be able to sharpen longer knife blades and strop the edges adequately. You should also consider whether or not the replacement parts are easy to obtain. These are all things that should be considered to ensure that you are getting everything you need, especially considering knife sharpeners appropriate for heavy duty maintenance can cost up to thousands of dollars. Heavy duty grinding wheels and chains saw sharpeners are, of course, for the serious woodworkers and landscapers. For all others, there is a wide variety of less expensive and more portable sharpening tools available. The handheld sharpener you would find in a butcher shop is a basic tool requiring no electricity. Other variations include the wheeled knife sharpeners in which the blade is drawn between two hard wheels. Abrasive materials are drawn against a knife at about a thirty degree angle, and this is done whether it is electric and manual. Regardless of manual or electric, you can still get a quality sharpening. At the heart of how sharp a tool can become is the skill of the knife owner at angling and stopping the blade. Knife sharpening classes and educational courses are offered, which may be a good idea if having the sharpest tool in the shed is important to you. Vince Paxton very often pens news on problems associated to honing and blade sharpening. You can discover his publications on knife sharpening at many different sources for knife sharpening information. Haggard and How Evangelicalism May Have Helped Him Hide for So Long

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Les Herron To be an evangelical leader you must appear at all times to be perfect. It is the “Most Spiritual Man in the Room” syndrome and consists of forcing evangelicals to look better than anyone else in the room (the proverbial room including the church and any organization you might lead). We all know that it is not possible to consistently be the most spiritual man in every room every time so it is important to develop outward phrases and ways of posturing oneself so that everyone assumes that you indeed are a fantastic person. To be an evangelical leader you must teach new truths all the time instead of depending on the basic message of love, peace, joy, and grace we find ourselves veering off into every new fangled spiritual experience out there that has the posh label of Evangelical Christian. The price tag is unbelievably high when you factor in the cost of losing focus on what it means to fulfill the Great Commission, dropping anything that looks like liberal practices or theology (even though it may be more loving than what we already do), and dropping the intellect as something that opposes the great new teachings that have been delivered from above (not The Above but from those even more spiritual guys then our local pastors who send down materials on how we are supposed to think, feel, act, and live) This teaching is very often dishonest because it purports to answer all of life’s questions, fulfill all of our relational needs, make us sit next to God, and fills our pockets with loads of cash. To be an evangelical pastor often means that you do not have any accountability (something Haggard happened to have at least corporately) exactly because you are the most spiritual person in the room and therefore who can be your spiritual guide other than the Holiest of Guides? The positioning and posturing of how great we are as leaders makes us the smartest guy in the room and allows us to teach just about anything we want without ever having to be bothered by actually doing it (or being questioned when wrong). To be evangelical you must worship a certain way, that way typically being demonstrative and using a full bag of ‘tricks’ to get God’s attention. As evangelicals we often believe that we know how everyone in the service should worship and that if you are following the music leader’s directions on how to worship God (possibly raising your hands, closing your eyes, bowing, or dancing at the right times) then you must be worshipping. This gives the evangelical the distinct advantage of being able to know the form and legal requirements of worship without ever having to embrace the heart of worship. Our hearts and thoughts can be wicked but at least we look like we are worshipping; and indeed, can point to our worshipful actions to prove our point. This same pattern of knowing how to lead on the outside with our insides being totally twisted up in sinful and contradictory thoughts and feelings helps us to hide our pain for a long, long time. This ability to have a pattern of a spiritual life without actually living in peace and joy makes the discovery of such pain within us almost shocking to those around us. The evangelical leader is forced to point to and describe the ‘bad guys’ as the liberal media and the anti-Christian forces that rally against us. We so very often point the finger at forces outside of our control instead of looking a little bit within to find out where the real problems are. Whenever Christians begin to blame others for their problems, complains that their nation should be Christian, and desires for all to live like they want to live (sound like Islam or Evangelical Christianity?) then that religion has forgotten that at the core we are spiritual and our greatest contribution to society is spiritual (this does not mean we should not be involved in all areas of the culture but it must not be first). In this kind of religious world the political agenda of law (and winning) then takes place over the heavenly agenda of love and God’s rescue of people. The ability to win an election with pro-life politicians in governmental position becomes more important than our own ability to volunteer at a clinic or a foster home. The desire to see gay marriages banned in the nation is stronger than our desire to see our own marriages strengthened and developing our children into Godly men and women. The force and passion with which many of us speak about politics has replaced the passion and fervor with which we speak about the love and kindness of Father God. I love being a follower of Christ and adhering to the teachings of Jesus and moving towards knowing more and more about God. What I cannot stand is this idea that we have it all together and are so much more spiritual than all of the other losers who practice their Christianity at a lower level than us. So, instead of looking at Ted Haggard and what he may have done wrong let us rather take a look at some of the structures and ways of thinking that are corrupt within the system of religion where we choose to live out our faith. Good Marketing Brings Instant Results

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Lance Winslow Many marketing consultants say that small business should not get frustrated, angry or irate when their marketing does not bring instant results to their companies. These marketing consultants generally believe that good marketing builds brands and that takes time. Well folks let me tell you why they are wrong. First off good marketing does bring long-term results, no one can debate that, but good marketing should also brings some noticeable instant results right away. And if it does not then there is a problem with your advertising, message or the medium used to deliver it. You see folks, for 27-years I have set up businesses and done so in some 23 states, 450 cities and 110 markets and four nations. If you are marketing correctly you should see immediate results, sure you should not expect everyone to instantly fall in love with your company over night, but you should turn enough heads to drive business to your company if your marketing is truly good. Many advertising salesmen and marketing consultants will preach repetition of your message, brand building and multiple impressions on the human brain of the potential future customer. Indeed all good, but you should notice results, which you can see almost immediately if everything thing is going right? If not you are not doing it right. Consider all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board.
