From Corn Flakes to Combined Annuities - Women Make the Buying Decisions

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

By Doug Emerson Details, details, details. They usually bore us men to tears or sleep. Here are some details you won’t cry or snooze over when you read them. We are asleep at the advertising and marketing switch if we ignore this freight train of information about how women think and make decisions. The five stages of the buying process: 1. Deciding to buy. Women usually make the decision it’s time to buy. 2. Research. Women “shop” the market for possibilities, eliminating the non-contenders. 3. Purchase. Women usually close the sale alone (with exception of car purchases) by making the deal. 4. Maintenance. 83% of household finances are handled by women. If they don’t like the attitude, treatment or “feel” of the company, they will fire the company. 5. Referral. Women are much more likely to provide referrals. In insurance, over the lifetime of a customer, a woman provides on average 28 referrals, vs. 13 for men. Did you catch the word women in each of the five stages above? The points are taken from an interview by Tom Peters with Martha Barletta author of “Marketing to Women.” This shouldn’t be a shock, men, but I want to remind you that women notice more things than men. As examples, women notice the belt loop you missed when you got dressed, the look the clerk at the hardware store gave to her, the tone of the teller at the bank. They also notice the grime on the office entry door, the fact that the salesman directs his sales pitch to the male in the couple and that car repair guy has no patience to explain the problem. Guys, here is the one thing that I want you to notice. Take a deep breath, focus and read the following sentence. Women are the primary customers for your goods or services. Wouldn’t it make sense to spend some time and money to do a better job marketing to them? That doesn’t mean we have to enroll in sensitivity school. (although this might not be a bad idea) It does not mean that we have to create new products or services just for women. Here is what you can do: 1. Recognize and track your female customers who make 85 % of all household purchases. 2. Refocus your advertising and marketing efforts to women when appropriate. 3. Reward referrals since women’s word of mouth endorsements will carry much credibility to the listener. Track where the referrals come from and say thank you. 4. A small gesture of a hand written thank you or gift box of hand soap will create a mountain of good will. Guys, there is more material than ever available on the web and in books and magazines on marketing to women . . .pay attention, are you listening?. . . get the details working for you. Collecting Blood Stem Cells For Research

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Greg_White] Greg White Cord blood stem cells are human cells that have the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body. The cells are in very early stages of development. Stem cells can turn into specialized cells such as liver cells, nerve cells, lung cells, etc. These cells can be taken from umbilical cord blood and grown outside the body in the laboratory. This allows scientists and researchers to study these cells isolated from other cells and in controlled conditions. Previously, research was done primarily using embryonic stem cells because these were known to work well. Using newer and advanced research techniques scientists have found that collecting umbilical blood stem cells work just as well and in some cases even better. There is a huge supply of stem cells that can be tapped into because there are blood stem cells as a byproduct with every birth. Even more encouraging is that the cells are not taken from embryos, a previous concern and cause for continued debate. Scientists are excited about the possibilities for curing and treating many various diseases in the future using blood stem cells. Already the results for recent research show encouraging results. Scientists have been able to grow a mini-liver in the lab using cord blood stem cells and are hopeful that in the future they may be able to develop an entire organ that would be available for transplant. While much additional research is needed, the future of collecting blood stem cells looks very promising. Cord blood stem cell banks are now available that collect and store stem cells so that they are available for later use. Parents must sign up for a stem cell bank before giving birth. Notification is given to the doctor and hospital so that the cord blood will be collected and sent to the bank. The bank then tests the blood and records a count of stem cells available. The blood is then packaged, sealed and stored in special cryogenically frozen areas for future use. Currently most hospitals are not equipped to save umbilical cord blood unless they are given previous notice. Hopefully this will change in the future to encourage more people to store or donate stem cells by allowing them to make an instant choice at birth. Using ones own stem cells for future transplants reduces the risk that the body will reject the organs or tissues because the DNA is an exact match. Even siblings and other family members will be able to take advantage of the stem cell bank if needed. Tibetan Medicine Defying Time

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

By Eric Cho Tibetan medicine is a centuries-old hallowed traditional medical system. This is a fairly complex approach to diagnosis and utilizes behavior and dietary modification, natural medicines and physical therapies to treat illnesses. Since Tibet is a border country, Tibetan medicine is a synthesis of the Indian (Ayurveda), Persian (Unani), Chinese, Greek and Tibetan medical systems. Tibetan medicine is practiced in a wide belt of the world including countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh, Siberia, China and Mongolia, in addition to Tibet. More recently, Tibetan medicine has also started seeping into the West, invading parts of Europe and America. Since Tibet is the land of monasteries, monks and meditation, it is inevitable that Tibetan medicine is a fusion of the scientific with the religious. It embraces the traditional Buddhist belief that illness of the body is caused by the poisons in the mind, namely ignorance, aggression and materialism. Tibetan medicine is an art, science and philosophy that encompasses a holistic approach to health care. It is an art because its diagnostic methods are based on creativity, subtlety, insight and compassion of the medical practitioner. It is a science because it has a systematic and logical framework that is based on the study of the body and its relationship with the environment. It is a philosophy because it embraces the Buddhist principles of altruism, ethics and karma. According to the underlying Buddhist philosophy that shapes Tibetan medicine, all suffering has a reason. According to the Buddha, impermanence is the only permanent feature of life. Everything in this world is in a state of flux. This is a reality and a necessity of life. This state of constant change brings with it suffering and it is this suffering that is inflicted on man from time to time. Thus suffering is not accidental. One can avoid suffering only through proper guidance and the rigorous following of ones Karma. According to Tibetan Medicine, everything in the universe is made of 5 elements Earth, water, fire, air and space. And each of these elements has a specific influence on man. Tibetan medicine also believes that there are 3 principle energies or humors in the body. These principle energies are responsible for the mental, physical and spiritual activities of the body. In a healthy body, all the elements are in proper equilibrium. Where there is non-equilibrium, a state of disorder or ill-health arises. Diagnosis in Tibetan medicine is fairly straightforward. Doctors depend on observation, interrogation and touch. Visual observation includes checking the color of the skin, texture and color of the nails, blood, sputum and faeces. The patients tongue and urine also gives important clues. The next step is pulse analysis where the physician places three middle fingers on the patients radial arteries. Medical interrogation leads the practitioner to important clues regarding the causative factors, site of the illness and symptoms that the patient is experiencing. Tibetan medicine places a lot of importance on dietary and lifestyle factors. The immediate reason for most disorders is improper diet or lifestyle. Therefore the first step of the treatment is to change the lifestyle and diet of the patient. Only if this fails, medication is used. Bloodletting, Moxibustion, golden-needle therapy and Tibetan acupuncture are some of the therapeutic measures taken. Medicinal baths and natural spring baths are also important parts of therapy. Good or Bad? Canadian Number Portability Coming Soon

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Barry_Nagassar]Barry Nagassar Canadian Number Portability is fast approaching. What exactly does it mean and include? For one, cellular customers who want to take advantage of better service/prices from other wireless carriers can switch while keeping their cell phone number. The major three cellular providers, Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Bell Mobility, have until March 14, 2007 to implement the CNP policies. This date was mandated by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), who also suggested that CNP would be released to a limited number of provinces to start (Alberta, Ontario, BC, Quebec.) There is no word whether wireless carriers will go ahead and bypass the minimum mandate and enable the entire country to take advantage of this service. How does it work? Customers should be able to switch to any service provider in your province (wireline or wireless) and keep your phone number. Hopefully all wireless carriers will enable portability, however, moving from an obscure provider from the East coast to an unknown provider in the West, may prove challenging. In the US customers faced challenges moving great distances, however, the US has many more providers than Canada. Throughout Canada, all wireless carriers will be required to release a phone number to another carrier (port-out customers) and by no later than September 12, 2007, to accept a phone number from another carrier (port-in customers). There is no word on how this will affect prepaid plans/phones. So is this good or bad news for the consumer? One can only hope that the absent price wars between the major companies will heat up. With the threat of losing customers to better service/costs on another carrier, we could see new deals for existing and new customers that we havent seen in Canada for a while. In reality there are three fundamental reasons why consumers will decide to change carriers: a) Better phones elsewhere, b)better service elsewhere, and c) better prices elsewhere. In the States consumers flocked not to necessarily better phones or plans, but better service. Verizon Wireless reaped the benefits of wireless number portability by a wide margin. Well have to see how Canadian carrier respond. In the meantime, lets analyse some of the pros and cons to wireless number portability. Cons: All portability moves must be done in sequence. That means to plan to port your number while STILL connected with your existing carrier. Cancel one service contract for another without going through the porting process and youll loose your number. Portability is no good if you have time left on your existing contract. You still need to honour your wireless contract for x many more months. If you choose to terminate you will face penalties as per usual. Chances are carriers will introduce a portability charge. That means even if you dont port your number youll pay a new service charge. (They have to gouge you somewhere right?!) This also means the activation fee you paid will likely exist on the new carrier. If you get away from activation fees be prepared for the portability fee when you actually make the transaction. Hopefully consumers wont get both. Expect delays and glitches at the start up, its bound to happen. Also, dont expect your past bills from your old carrier to go away once you switch. Pros: Taking advantage of the new pricing and plan options from carriers looking to capture competing customers. That means lower prices for you, new contracts only though. You finally have the option of getting rid of the crappy service and show that corporate giant whos boss by voting with your feet. Existing customers will be given incentives to stay with their carriers, more minutes, features, etc. Switching carriers usually means a new phone (if youre a new customer). If you move to GSM providers youll have two! Porting usually takes a few hours so wait time is minimal. And finally, once you have your number working on another carrier dont be surprised if you get the same crappy service as before. You can never win it seems at this wireless game. But then again, you may find that the grass is a little greener on the other side. The Pros will hopefully outweigh the Cons, hopefully consumers will see better prices and phone deals in the future. Insider Secrets That Keep Women From Losing Fat and Inches

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

By Heather Picken When it comes to losing fat many women are making huge mistakes and as a result they are not getting the results they want. 1. Doing the same exercise routine Women who do the same workout over and over without changing it will notice after awhile it stops producing results and they immediately become frustrated! To start burning fat again change your routine around (the sequence in which you perform your exercises). 2. Doing too much cardio I find a lot of women do too much cardio and never get the results they want! One of the reasons is that doing too much and not eating enough will slow down your metabolism. 3. Not doing a fat-burning workout Most women who dont see results as fast as they want to are not working out with enough intensity! You dont need to spend hours in the gym to blast fat. Focus on intensity to where you are breathing heavy and sweating. Women who participate in a boot camp program or circuit training can easily accomplish this type of workout. 4. Doing cardio the wrong way Reading magazines or talking on the phone when doing cardio, it becomes a social hour and if you are looking to burn more fat you need to work a little harder so that holding a conversation is challenging. 5. Not doing any resistance training Most women will focus on only cardio and are either afraid to lift weights or dont realize the incredible fat-burning benefits. Your metabolism is elevated throughout the day when you weight train. Whereas with cardio it only stays elevated when you are doing it and only a few hours after that. 6. Lifting too light Lifting light and lots of reps is not going to help you burn more fat, it is the intensity of the load (with the weights) that you are lifting. Dont be afraid to challenge your muscles, it will only help you burn more fat! 7. Having the wrong workout for your body type If you want to create a more pleasing look to sculpt your body then you need to focus on training that body part. For example, if you have a weak upper body and it does not match the rest of your body, then your workouts should focus more on that part first! 8. Not doing cardio at the right times Most women do cardio before weight training, which is not the most effective way to burn fat. The best way to burn more fat is to do your resistance training first then immediately follow cardio. This enables your body to burn more fat efficiently since it has burned off your glycogen (stored energy), plus you will have more energy to lift weights! (c) 2006 I Feel Like A Million Bucks! Modern Day Apostles Series Introduction and Article One

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

By Rascal Miles When most people hear the word Apostle, they think of the twelve Apostles who were selected by Jesus to accompany Him during His three-year earthly ministry here on this planet. Part of these Apostle’s stories are recorded in what has become The New Testament of our Holy Bible. Yet another Apostle, Saul who later changed his name to Paul, which means “Little”, wrote most of this New Testament Bible. Paul was also called by Christ to be an Apostle. Although Paul did not write The Acts of the Apostles, it includes much about his early ministry. Saul enters our drama when Stephen, a “Spirit filled” waiter, was stoned to death for his radical blasphemy against the acceptable Jewish belief system in Roman province city of Jerusalem. Acts 7:59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on [God] and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Acts 8:1 Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church, which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Saul was going to round up or catch followers of Jesus, the radical one who was considered responsible for leading many devout Jews astray. Acts 26: 9 “Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 “This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against [them.] 11 “And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled [them] to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted [them] even to foreign cities. 12 ” While thus occupied, as I journeyed to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, Called Saul of Tarsus, he was blinded by a light, knocked from his donkey on the road to Damascus. Acts 9:4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” Acts9: 14 “And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? [It is] hard for you to kick against the goads.’ 15 “So I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 16 ‘But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17 ‘I will deliver you from the [Jewish] people, as well as [from] the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 ‘to open their eyes, [in order] to turn [them] from darkness to light, and [from] the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ Saint Paul, (circa ad 3-62), the greatest missionary of Christianity and its first theologian, is often called Apostle to the Gentiles. Yet the other believers did not immediately embrace Paul. Acts 9:26. And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. With all due respect, I suggest that Paul was the first “Modern Day Apostle.” After Judas hanged himself, prior to Saul’s conversion and call, The Lord’s Apostles selected a disciple Acts 1:26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. Paul was, by no means, the last Apostle to be called. He introduces himself as Romans 1:1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called [to be] an apostle, separated to the gospel of God So how does an Apostle fit into the body of Christ? 1 Cor 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. In reference to Jesus, Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some [to be] apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, This series, “Modern Day Apostles,” will focus on who and what Apostles are and what they are called to do. Published by author Rascal, the series should provide some new information to be considered. Additional ezine articles ~ which may be of interest to readers ~ are published as author Russ Miles. Healing Our Spirits - When is Healing Successful

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

By KG Stiles Let’s explore through this three-part story just what is behind the Great Mystery of why some people experience healing while others do not. Modern day research is able to map how a change in our beliefs and attitudes results in subsequent changes in our body’s chemistry which in turn leads to the restructuring of our very cell tissue and altering of our DNA. Is this where healing resides - in our beliefs and attitudes? It is now known that our beliefs and attitudes function as filters for our perceptions and color the way we interpret our world. They are the way we choose to orient to the ‘field of intention,’ that sticky subatomic world that animates and gives life to all material reality. “The Pregnant Void!” Is what I call this “sticky stuff.” It is this immaterial substance, or what quantum physicists are calling “quarks,” that is behind all that is manifest in the material world. This “Pregnant Void” is pure animation, or creative potentiality that is absolutely neutral, meaning it has no attachment and no resistance. Thus the “Pregnant Void” responds to our every intention or energized thought form and brings us exactly what we hold as our intention! Could it be the way we choose to live our ordinary daily lives, the intention or motive behind our actions, is where the experience of healing resides? Join me in the next part in this series for the story of a man I’ll call Jack, diagnosed with stomach cancer. Aromatherpay can be most helpful for promoting inner peace and healing. The three essential oils I recommend are Ylang Ylang, German (True) Chamomile or Vetiver. Weight Loss & Calorie Burning Myths

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

By Craig Ballantyne Myth: “They” say that adding a pound of muscle causes your body to burn an extra 50 calories per day. THE TRUTH: Wishful thinking. Adding a pound of muscle to your physique burns only 5-10 extra calories. Nevertheless, building muscle is still the best fat-loss strategy. The average man will burn about 350 calories in a weight workout, and his metabolism will remain elevated for up to 36 hours afterward, burning an additional 250 calories. To build any muscle, he’ll have to eat protein, which burns twice as many calories as an equal amount of carbs and fat just to digest. So while the reward of new muscle itself is helpful, it’s the means that justify the end. By adopting the weight training lifestyle, you create a perpetual fat-burning furnace. Myth: “They” say that squirting some lemon juice in water and drinking it ice cold will help burn fat. THE TRUTH: This is just another weight loss myth making the rounds as people search for a magic potion and an effortless way to lose fat. But there’s simply no substitute for a good training program and proper nutrition. Too many people have been led to believe that drinking ice cold water with lemon juice will help people lose fat (generally this info comes from fluffy non-fitness magazines). Neither of these alterations to your water will be enough to actually make a difference in a fat loss program. Again, this is wishful thinking. But if the water helps fill you up and keep you from drinking soda or eating poor snacks, then keep drinking appropriate amounts, but don’t worry about how cold it is or if it contains lemon juice. Untapped Genius Everywhere We Go

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

By Robert Daniel There are hundreds of millions of children in the world.Every child who goes to school has a go at creative writing. Many do this every day.Out of the billions of stories children create, every day, out of their own vivid imaginations, none are published. OK there may be one or two, now and again, that are exceptional and the dedicated teacher or parent brings it to the attention of a publisher. But this is unlikely. The section of the population best qualified to write childrens stories are mainly ignored by publishers. And naturally they have a point. Stories such as these are rarely shown to publishers anyway. Instead they are put in a drawer, in a bag, maybe stuck on a wall for a few weeks, hidden away in folders, lost, screwed up, never to be seen or heard of again. Young people, like adults, will rarely produce a piece of work ready for publishing. Most need plenty of work, re working, even re writing. But it isnt the finished product thats exciting when children write stories, its the free flowing way their ideas spread across the page. Perhaps the story comes out in one go, maybe a gem of an idea is hidden in what is otherwise a long, laboured piece of writing. Often this is the only way to get to a deeply hidden thought or concept that we’re not even aware exists. This untapped source of stories has the potential to take childrens writing to another level, and not just writing. Young artists are found in every classroom, many of them hiding away doodling in a corner, behind an arm, creating vibrant, brilliant ideas and images that also end up in a drawer, screwed up in a pocket and eventually in the bin.Few of these budding writers and illustrators will ever put their skills to good use. The two finest artists I know are both in their forties. One is a carpenter and hates it, the other is a painter and decorator, and he hates it as well. Both spent the majority of their school years getting into trouble and used art as a way of expressing themselves. Both are musicians too, as many artists are.
