Call it the precursor to the Mommy Wars, the name change debate can be just as ruthless, just as grievous, and that seemingly perfect solution, just as elusive. Granted, for many women the name game is a non-issue. In fact, The Lucy Stone League, an organization named after a woman who refused to take her husband’s name when she married in 1855, estimates about 90 percent of women marrying today will drop their own name to take their husband’s. Hmmmm so is the great debate merely a grand illusion leftover from bra-burning second wave feminists of the 1970s? Hardly. Because while most women say I do to taking their husbands last name, a great many of them struggle with the concept and the decision. A quick glance at some online forums dedicated to the topic affirmed that this is still a hot button issue with judgment, perceived or actual, running rampant on both sides of the proverbial fence. Even those brides who didnt agonize over the decision are painfully aware of potential ramifications of their married name and judgments the other camp may inflict; Oh you took his last name? Well, isnt that so 1950s house-wifey of you! And the condemnation is by no means exclusive to one side From the other side, you may hear, So you hyphenated your last name? Are you that insecure that you feel the need to assert your independence with every penned signature? And so on and so forthThe judgment of women by fellow women seems to begin with the name change and continues through to the next hot button issue whether or not to work outside the home. And we all know that no one is going to solve these issues any time soon. Thus, its understandable that many engaged women struggle with the notion of the impending name change. If you are one of those women who cant seem to find that easy answer - that perfect solution - relax in knowing that youre not the first woman to wrestle with the concept, and you most certainly wont be the last. Reasons Women Resist Changing your name is never easy; you must get a new drivers license, passport, and credit cards. Then slowly you change subscriptions, membership cards, address books The process is inconvenient and time consuming, but this doesnt even factor how long it takes psychologically to accept a new married name as your true identity. The root of the dissonance lies deeper. Identity - Lets face it the thought of changing the name thats stamped on your birth certificate can seem like a door slamming shut on the woman that was. For many women this is a tough psychological transition to accept. Cultural Significance - Some women, particularly from strong ethnic backgrounds, consider their maiden names a testament to a proud cultural background strongly tied to their character. Any other name would be an inaccurate depiction of their cultural identity. A woman of Asian descent, for example, may find it absurd to transform suddenly into a Smith or a Jones. Family History - A rich and storied family background may have bore a woman a name wrought with historical meaning signifying generations of ancestors who overcame countless obstacles to flourish in a new world. She may have a strong personal connection to such a name that shes not quite ready to shake. Professional Consideration - For women who have literally built names for themselves professionally, they may find a name change too difficult or too costly for their careers. Lineage - Many women feel a strong urge to ensure their family name lives on. Perhaps you are the last in your generation who can pass down the family moniker and dont want to be the cause of a dying breed. Options Galore Just like the number of potential personal reasons behind the internal struggle, the range of naming options varies. Before making a hasty decision, realize that there a number of ways you can go in finding a name that fits. Maiden in the Middle - Take his name but replace your middle name with your maiden name. You can still have both names without the often-awkward hyphen. Implications - This is a great way to honor both your maiden name and your hubbys. You will still have to go through the process of changing your name, however, and if you feel this solution does not properly address the societal implications of female ownership, this option may not work for you. You may also really like your middle name and hesitate to lose it. Pass it On - Take his name and give your maiden name to one of your children, either as a first or middle name. Implications - This is another good way to pay homage to your maiden name and ensure that it survives at least one more generation. Again, if you have concerns with the idea of changing your last name at all, this may not be the solution for you. A Night and Day Difference - Keep your maiden name professionally and his name socially. You can go ahead and officially change your name, while keeping your maiden name at work and in professional circles (many celebrities do this). Implications - This option seems like a good compromise, but realize that many people will get confused, especially if a lot of your social network is comprised of professional acquaintances and vice versa. Have it All - Add his name to the end of yours essentially creating two middle names for yourself. You dont always have to go by all four, and you will both have the same last name without the confusing hyphen. Implications - You will still essentially have his last name; if this is a problem for you, this may not be a solution. Implications - This option lets you have the best of both worlds, but can be tough on the tongue and even the ear. Of course, there is also the whole conundrum: Mrs. Long-Smith marries Mr. Tom-Jones, and they have a son named Mr. Tom-Jones-Long-Smith. Because of this, many perceive the hyphen as merely a one-generation solution. Also, consider the fact that your immediate family will all have different last names. There is something very unifying about introducing the bunch as The Anderson Family. Get Creative - Create a new name either hyphenated or a new name altogether that you both share. Implications - The epitome of fairness and compromise, this option solves the problem of multiple last names for the same family. However, if you were originally hesitant to give up your identity to take his last name, taking on a completely random identity with no ties to either of you may seem senseless. His and Hers - Keep your name both of you will have different last names entirely Implications - By keeping your name as is, you can forego the whole name change process. You stay you; he stays himself. Amazingly enough in these seemingly modern times, however, having a different last name from your husband can cause confusion. What will you name your children? And regardless of how many people you inform that you have kept your maiden name, some will still refer to you as Mrs. Husbandslastname. You will need to be prepared to handle this gracefully when correcting people. Go Mod. - Keep your name and he takes your name. Implications - Well, why not?? Women have been doing it for centuries, so its about time the tables turned. But lets face it - even in these modern times - the idea of a man taking his wifes last name can seem outrageously out-there to some. He may face some ridicule from his friends, and his family may or may not be supportive of the idea. And if you are insistent that your taking his last name is oppressive, why is it any less oppressive for him to have to take yours? Go Traditional - Take his name and join the ranks of 90% of women getting married today. Implications - Convenience-wise, taking his name will make your life easier (you wont have to explain to countless strangers that yes, you really are married, and yes, little Tom and Jane really are your children. Deep down, many women see doing so as an act of love and commitment, not something to be judged in terms of gender politics. If being perceived as old-fashioned and dependent are whats stopping you, assert your independence and ignore it. Instead, consider taking your husbands name a sign of entering new stage in life, for there arent too many instances when its perfectly acceptable and even encouraged to shed your old skin and embrace a fresh new beginning. Of course, if letting go of your maiden name just doesnt feel quite right for you dont fight it for traditions sake (see above for possible alternative solutions!) Things to Remember Regardless of the name you choose, invite your future husband into your internal dialogue. If the decision is troublesome for you, alert him from the beginning and discuss with him your reasons for debating the name change. The final decision should be one that is comfortable for both of you and to heck with the rest of them! And just what can we take away from the sea of perplexities and countless naming options? When you use abundant water, the plant does not need more water for a while, so you can space the watering. If not watered properly, the plant may die, even though the surface of the soil may appear wet. 4. VENTILATION is a key factor since some indoor plants need air moving around them occasionally, so their stems and leaves can gain in strength. Although they do not need a continuous flow of air, the truth is that they get exactly what they need under “friendly” weather conditions, that is early autumn, spring or summer, when we naturally open doors and windows and allow breeze to flow. But in winter we keep windows closed for longer periods of time, therefore preventing air flows. Again you should ensure that your specific plant is receptive to air flows (not all indoor plants are). 5. Some plants may undergo a period of HIBERNATION during winter. Hibernation is just a natural mechanism of the plants to protect themselves of adverse weather conditions. During this “sleeping period” the plant may stop growing or even appear weak and loose their leaves. Consequently, the owner believes (wrongly) that the plant is dying or dead and ends up throwing it away. The thing is, while plants hibernate, they don’t need so much water nor fertilizer. If you doubt whether your plant is hibernating or actually dead, just leave it where it is and water it occasionally, and you might just see it alive again in spring. By Ed Gandia Most B2B marketers spend a great deal of time analyzing the performance of their programs and initiatives. The reason is obvious: With the growing pressure on marketing to produce measurable results, its critical that every marketing dollar is invested wisely. Thats why Im surprised when I come across companies selling complex products or services that fail to accurately track their lead sources — arguably one of the most important pieces in the performance metrics puzzle. Every lead has a source — something that drove that individual to contact your company. Whether it is a clear, obvious reason — or a combination of reasons (campaign that led to a Webinarthat led to a white paperthat led to an inquiry) — if you fail to properly classify the inquirys source, you will invariably end up with flawed data. And flawed data can lead to poor marketing decisions. Of course, many organizations have their campaign information and web request form data automatically fed into their CRM system. But the lions share of the leads may still be coming in via incoming calls, direct mail, and outbound telesales — and thats where many of the lead coding problems occur. **Are You Properly Tracking Lead Sources?** I know of a very successful technology company that still clings to an inadequate, overly simplistic lead source tracking system. As leads come in, their inside sales folks are forced to code them with one of only four source descriptions: 1. Telesales Outbound 2. Account Executive Outbound 3. Web Lead 4. Customer Referral The problem with these limited definitions is obvious: Theres no way to account for leads generated through direct mail, email campaigns, trade shows, advertising, press coverage, webinars, or any of the many other marketing vehicles this company employs. Secondly, this approach mixes the reason a prospective customer made an inquiry (customer referral, for example) with the vehicle the lead used to contact the vendor (the vendors website). Not a good idea. When I asked them why they limit their source categories to these four, they explained it had something to do with their financial reporting — not with gathering marketing intelligence (Im not kidding!). Bottom line: marketing is making budgeting decisions every year based on very limited and misguided information. My recommendation to this company — and something Id urge you to consider if you havent already — was to develop a much broader lead source classification system. I recommended they develop methods and rules for classifying leads. Rules and definitions that made sense to everyone (including the accounting department), and provided marketing the information they need to make better decisions. **4 Steps to Improving Source Tracking** Here are some suggestions on how you can improve the tracking of your lead sources: * Hold a meeting. Make sure to include at least one account executive or outside rep in the discussion, besides your telesales/inside sales team. They may help provide a different perspective on source definitions. * Brainstorm a list of every possible lead source you can think of. Dont judge any suggestion yet. At this point youre simply trying to generate a thorough list of possible sources. * Narrow the list down to a manageable number of categories. For example, if you typically exhibit at both, trade shows and conventions, you may decide to combine these categories into trade exhibits. * Agree on the rules for classifying inquiries. Tracking lead sources is not always as clear-cut as it may appear. For example, a trade show could have generated a warm inquiry that never materialized. Yet, because of your lead nurturing program (email, telesales, and direct mail, for example), you were able to revive this prospect into a true opportunity 8 months later. How would you classify it the second time around? You may decide to use the last vehicle that triggered the interest (direct mail, for example), or you may want to give full credit to the trade show that sparked the initial inquiry. Or maybe even split the credit between the two. The important thing is to get complete agreement from your team as to how leads will be classified, and to stick to your agreed-upon rules when classifying. When you properly code incoming leads, you end up with more accurate data. Right around Thanksgiving they appear in every store that handles plants and millions are purchased to decorate homes and businesses. Even though there are nowadays other colors and strangely formed bracts available, it must have been the showy, bright red and green leaves, called bracts, that have turned the Poinsettia into a favorite of the Christmas season. The Poinsettias that are sold for the Holidays are mostly grown in greenhouses where moisture and hours of daylight can be controlled. Once the plants go to market, growing conditions are not quite so ideal. Poinsettias like moist soil but no standing water, they like sunshine and don’t like sudden temperature changes or drafts. Not having those conditions often causes a rapid decline and the leaves fall prematurely. At that point probably most Poinsettia plants are doomed and go into the trash. If you took better care of your Poinsettia and nursed it along into early spring, when the leaves fall naturally , you might be ready to give it a second chance. Cut the stems back to two buds, reduce watering to a minimum, stop fertilizing and store in a cool spot until late spring. When there is no more danger of frost, set the pot in light shade outdoors. By July you can resume fertilizing and might consider repotting into a larger pot. In August you can cut the stems back to just three leaves per shoot to make the plant bushier. If you live in a milder climate, your poinsettia might survive outside in a sheltered spot, otherwise, when there is any danger of frost, you should bring the plant inside. Since the bracts only turn color when the plant experiences long nights, it should be in the dark from 5 pm to 8 am the next day for ten weeks, starting in late September.
