By Justin Brooke Positive thinking is not always easy, however if you used a positive thinking strategy on something you hated, you could learn to love it. You could even use it to cure anxiety and panic attacks. Your thoughts are not physical, they are simply thoughts and you have to understand that. No matter what you think, you do have the power to change your thoughts. Think of a thought as if it were a solid red brick for just a moment. Ok so now you have this solid red brick in front of you. How would you change its shape? Well, first you might think of grabbing a tool, like a hammer. By using this tool (hammer) you can start to change the shape of your solid red brick by strategically breaking pieces off. Your mind has the exact same powers with your thoughts. Your mind is the tool in which you can use to re-shape your thoughts. As soon as you learn how to do this and apply it to your anxiety you will gain immense powers against panic attacks. I applied this and a few other things listed in my full report to cure anxiety and panic attacks for myself. It got to the point where I would feel the panic attack brewing, and then welcome it, beg it to come! Panic is a coward! It only wants to fight you if you are scared of it. The moment I would beg the panic attack to come in, I would lose the feeling and in a few minutes totally forget the slight encounter. I compare it to when/if you meet a wild dog in the woods - whoever shows fear first loses! There are techniques to get out of a panic attack and they work, but who wants to wait around for a panic attack to hit before getting help? Techniques to a stop even the worst panic attacks:Close your eyes, select a place you feel most comfortable at. Then an activity you like to do. Walk yourself through the steps of entering that desirable place and then through the activity you enjoy doing there. The key to success with this technique is to imagine fine details. For example, if your enjoy playing cards, picture yourself entering a card game, holding the cards, shuffling the cards, competing against other players and winning. Remember positive thinking - there are no bad situations in this technique.Cold showers. The colder the shower the better this technique works. Tell yourself out loud, thank you anxiety for warning me something could be wrong, but right now I am sitting (whatever your actions are when the panic attack occurs) and nothing is wrong with me. I appreciate your concern. This only works if its said aloud.Finally, stay busy. If your mind is concerned with the environment around you, it wont have time to deal with your anxiety. By Jonathan Johnson Plants, like people, need to be fed regularly, and like people, too much or too little is not a good thing. So, giving advice on fertilizing plants can be challenging. Differences in soil types, existing nutrients, plant type and climate are but a few of the factors that affect proper fertilization. First, let’s understand a little bit about fertilizers in general. All plants require at least 17 different nutrients to survive. Some nutrients come from the air, some from water and others from the soil. When we fertilize a plant, we are adding some of the nutrients that come from the soil. When we fertilize, three nutrients stand out as the ones that are needed in the greatest amount and that need to be supplemented most often. These are called the primary nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium . Every fertilizer will have three numbers on its label to indicate the percentage of each of these three nutrients that it contains. For example, our Bud-N-Bloom Booster is a 15-30-15 formulation. It contains 15% nitrogen, 30% phosphorus, and 15% potassium. Knowing the formulation is important, but there are other factors such as solubility, molecular form, etc. that directly affect nutrient availability. We will leave those details to the plant scientists and others who have a more technical interest, but it is essential to purchase fertilizers from a trusted source so you can have confidence that you are getting what you pay for and what your plants need. Annuals also require a lot of nutrients to sustain their rapid growth and flowering. For best results fertilize young, fast growing plants and all annuals every one to two weeks with a soluble fertilizer, such as one of our Bud-N-Bloom fertilizers. For established shrubs and trees two or three feeding in the spring to early summer should be sufficient. When applying soluble fertilizers, like those offered by Cottage Farms, the application would be very similar to a “watering” as described in the Basic Garden Watering section. If you chose to use a “dry” fertilizer, place the fertilizer where it will reach the plant roots, within the area between the trunk and the drip line. Spread the fertilizer evenly over the entire area and be cautious to avoid getting fertilizer on the trunk. The best time for this application is in the spring when you see some new growth emerging. If you have shrubs and trees planted in grassy areas you will want to apply several small amounts to avoid burning the grass. If you use a “slow release” fertilizer, follow the label closely as each formulation varies in content and longevity. Never fertilize a dry plant . It is a good idea to thoroughly water a plant the day before fertilizing. Be sure you have had rain or you have irrigated between fertilizations. Remember more is not better when it comes to fertilizing. It is very important to read the fertilizers directions on how much to apply. It is better to use less fertilizer more often than too much which can burn the roots and kill the plant. As a general rule, fast growing plants like annuals need more fertilizer than slower growing plants. For most plants, stop all fertilization with the approach of fall and allow the plants to harden off and enter winter dormancy. Over fertilization: Too much fertilizer creates a “salty” condition in the soil that can damage roots and inhibit water and nutrient uptake. The symptoms are similar to the signs of under watering (drought). Under fertilization: Nutrient deficiencies occur when one or more of the essential nutrients are unavailable or in short supply. Nitrogen deficiency is probably the most common deficiency, and its symptoms are yellowing of the lower (older) leaves. Most deficiencies are difficult to diagnose and are usually avoided with adequate fertilization. Certainly, then, the Net is a veritable treasure trove of information for students, who routinely turn the Web for help with their coursework. Yet, all this knowledge is of little use if you dont know how to locate and access what you need, quickly and easily. Enter search engines! Search engines are essentially tools that allow you to search for information available on the Web using keywords and search terms. Rather than searching the Web itself, however, you are actually searching the engine’s database of files. Search engines are actually three separate tools in one. The spider is a program that crawls through the Web, moving from link to link, looking for new web pages. Once it finds new sites or files, it adds them to the search engine’s index. This index is a searchable database of all the information the spider has found on the Web. Some engines index every word in each document, while others select certain words (such as those occurring most often). The search engine itself is a piece of software that allows users to search the engine’s database. Clearly, an engine’s search is only as good as the index it’s searching. So, when you run a query using a search engine, you’re really only searching the engine’s index of what’s on the Web, as opposed to the entire Web. No one search engine is capable of indexing everything on the Web - there’s just too much information out there! Consequently, much of the information overlooked in search engine queries includes breaking news, documents, multimedia files, images, tables, and other data. Collectively, these types of resources are referred to as the deep or invisible Web. They’re buried deep in the Web and are invisible to search engines. Search engines usually feature advertisements in the form of paid results. Those sites that pay a fee may be included in your search results, usually at the very top of the list. Some engines group advertisers separately, for instance, on the side of the page. While search engines must clearly label all advertisers, they vary widely in their compliance with FTC rules. The method by which an engine determines how its search results will be presented to the user is called ranking. Early search engines, now called first generation search engines, used term ranking to organize their results. In term ranking, a result’s importance is determined by how often and where the search term appears in the document. Most of today’s search engines are much more sophisticated than this. These second generation search engines use a number of methods, sometimes in combination, to rank their results. In relevancy ranking, second generation engines use various algorithms to determine a document’s relevance to your search. This is by far the most popular ranking method, though engines often allow you to sort your results alphabetically or group them by site, source, and/or concept. In addition to ranking method, a number of other features distinguish one engine from another. You will encounter two basic types of search engines. Individual search engines are just that - individual engines which compile and search their own databases. Meta search engines, on the other hand, search several individual search engines at once. Meta engines do not maintain their own databases, but search those assembled by other engines. Meta engines present their search results in one of two ways. Using separate retrieval, they may group the results collected from each individual engine separately, so that you have a list of results from each engine. Separate retrieval often results in many redundant hits. Collated retrieval solves this problem by weeding out duplicate results obtained from different individual engines. Many engines allow you to choose between the two or even use collated retrieval while still grouping your results by search engine source. Search engines can be useful when conducting research, as long as you exercise caution. Always keep an eye out for paid results, and try to avoid engines that don’t disclose their advertisers. Search engines are a good idea when you have a very specific or obscure topic to research. Queries for broad or popular topics will return more results than is practical, and the information found may be of questionable quality. Thus, you should stick to academic databases unless you are having trouble finding enough information on your topic. Search engines can also be helpful if you’re looking for specific types of files, such as pictures. Meta engines are even more helpful in tackling those needle in a haystack searches, since they conduct several searches at once. For this reason, they are also good if you want to get an overview of what is out there, or if your topic is an uncommon one. Keep in mind, though, that meta searches will only retrieve the most relevant results from each engine, since they’re limited in the number of results they can uncover. Another casualty of meta searches is flexibility. Because you’re searching many engines at once, you’re only granted access to the search features that they all have in common. Finally, you should not rely on any one engine. Recall that each engine draws on a different database (or group of databases, as is the case with meta engines). Some cover portions of the deep web, while others go nowhere near it. Accordingly, you will get a different set of results depending on which engine you use. Rather than become familiar with only one, try out a number of them and pick a dozen or so that you like. While you should read each engine’s instructions before running a search, don’t try to memorize all the details, since they’re likely to change anyway! Search engines are an excellent means of locating otherwise impossible-to-find information online. There are many options available for the discriminating student researcher, so be selective and choose an engine that meets your unique needs! Collecting Vintage Desk Ink Blotters

By Glyn Farber Back in the days when everyone used quill pens and fountain pens the one thing that could be found on every office or writing desk was an ink blotter. Ink blotters were usually made of a soft absorbent paper formed into a card and were used to dry up excess ink. With the invention of ballpoint pen in the 1950s, ink blotters disappeared from the average office desk. Today, these vintage blotters, made in the 1930s and 1940s, are very highly prized and sought after collectibles. Ink Blotters were a very popular from of advertising that were often given away by fountain pen manufacturers, banks, merchants and especially Insurance Companies. Antique Ink blotters were as common as business cards are today. Written references to ink blotting paper in America have been found beginning in the late 1700s. It was not until the 1850s that blotting paper came into common use in America, when Joseph Parker and Son started manufacturing blotting paper. In the late 1800s, a patent was issued for improved blotting paper which featured a smooth surface on one side and a blotting surface on the other. Rocker blotters were an important piece of desk equipment from the late 1880s until the 1950s. This type of blotter had a handle 2 to 5 inches long and a rounded surface 2 to 3 inches wide where the blotting paper was attached. Some of these rocker blotters were very ornate and made of wood, glass, silver or brass and are also sought after by collectors. Why not start a collection of vintage ink blotter today from your home town or state. You can find them at local antique stores and flea markets but the one and only place to find a large selection of vintage advertising ink blotters is eBay. To display your ink blotter collection use archival, acid free 3 pocket protective pages that are used by currency or dollar bill collectors. Then store the pages in a three ring binder and lay the binder flat rather than upright. 3 pocket protective pages can be purchased at your local coin shop, on line or on eBay. The art work on some ink blotters are very beautiful and ornate. Take 2 or 3 and have them matted and framed. Zohar, Genesis, Introduction, 52 OUR PURPOSE FOR THE STUDY Students of Kabbalah understand the Torah (Hebrew Bible) as a mystical book wherein the Kabbalistic system is embodied in allegories and symbols. Thus, the Torah and the Kabbalah are dependent on and complete each other. . The illumination emanating from the study ignites the soul, setting it on fire with the awareness of a deeper and Higher Reality. Its study and insights are themselves mystical experiences. INTRODUCTION - BIBLICAL TEXT: “Come to Pharoah, for I have hardened his heart” (Exodus 10:1) In this week’s Torah portion, we read that G-d hardens Pharoah’s heart. In Hebrew thought, the heart is the core of a person, the seat of emotions, intellect and will. Regarding the above Biblical verse several questions must be raised: If G-d was controlling Pharoah’s heart, then Pharoah had no choice to do what he did and was therefore not really making his own decisions. Why thenblame Pharoah for anything? Additionally, where is the Free Will in all this? The following commentaries based on Judaism’s Hasidic tradition shed some very interesting insight into the entire Biblical account, and of course, into ourselves. It will comprise of three sections, with each section introducing a Spiritual Law: First Law - Light is Impartial Second Law - Law of Accountability Third Law - Law of Correction FIRST LAW: LIGHT IS IMPARTIAL The following is a beginning point, taught as a fundamental principle by RabbiNachman of Breslov: “From the mouth of the Most High comes neither good nor bad. What emanates is a simple Light. However, according to the level of the vessel that receives the Light, so is Light inside formed and perceived.” In other words, Reb Nachman is saying the following: Light, as revealed in our world, is not selective, nor does it discriminate. It is present in It’s entirety at all times and in all places. This Light follows the direction we put our attention and energy. Since this Light is all-inclusive and all-pervading, we have a responsibility with where we focus our attention. Since Light does not discriminate as to where It is led, then why could It not be the very energy behind the hardening of Pharoah’s heart? It is Pharoah who is choosing to harden his heart, Light is just the energy he is using towards his own decisions. As it says in the Talmud, “The door shall be opened for one who comes knocking to defile himself” (Masechet Yoma: 38b) This is where free choice comes in. According to the Torah, we are even given “assistance” even to make the wrong choices. Again, this is because the Light does not discriminate. It gives of Itself to all. With this in mind, the following Hasidic commentary comes as a very interesting point to WHY Pharoah needed G-d’s Light to harden his own heart: “Pharoah needed to be strengthened by G-d in order to keep his composure and make his own choices. Moses and Aaron, were after all, great tzaddikim (holy sages), full of signs and wonders. It would have been impossible not to surrender to them had not Pharoah’s heart been made stronger by G-d.” (Source: Rabbi Eliezer Ish Horowitz in Noam Megadim). This idea of G-d being the fuel behind even one’s misdirected, foolish and evil intentions may be shocking, but it is not something new. Our tradition recognizes that conscious thought is the starting point of every new creation, and since our world is a Free Will Zone, we have a responsibility of where we direct and focus our thoughts/energy. In other words, Torah teaches us personal accountability that must be taken with great sensitivity and awareness, as we come to realize what a tremendous power we have at our conscious disposal. Learning from Pharoah’s misuse of SpiritualLaw, we need to do the opposite, as we shall soon see. WHAT WENT WRONG? Since Light is impartial, does this justify Pharoah’s position? Absolutely not. The Zohar (3:47b) states, “The greatest revelation of G-dliness is the Light that emerges from Darkness.” Thus we see that not only is there value to darkness - but when we attempt to draw Light out from it, it becomes the GREATEST display of G-dliness. Reb Tzadok HaCohen adds the following insight regarding darkness: “The (Hebrew) word for darkness - choshech can be read in two different ways,(depending on whether we read the interchangeable middle letter as a shin or a sin) A dot on the right side will give us the word choshech-darkness. A dot on the left will yield the word chosech-to withhold. What then is darkness but the withholding of Light?” If darkness is the withholding of Light, our job in the world then becomes to reveal it. A good place to begin is within ourselves. “Every time you find yourself at conflict with a part of yourself that is self sabotaging -the Pharoah part - remember that the force of might that is behind this destructive part is really an unconscious and misdirected power, a “hardening” of G-d. When you unravel the hardened heart, you will discover that the intention is pure and the power is G-dly, and thus, transformable.” - Rabbi Avraham of Trisk (Magen Avraham) What happens to those, such as Pharoah, who do not seek to “unravel the hardened heart”? When one does not take a personal accountability of their resistances to change, it is inevitable that plagues break out. It took 10 plagues until Pharoah, the archetype of resistance, was able to surrender to the inevitable change that awaited him. This introduces us to our Second Law - the Law of Accountability. SECOND LAW - LAW OF ACCOUNTABILITY In order to understand the Metaphysics behind the Law of Accountability we need to further understand what our role is in dealing with Light and Darkness. According to Judaism’s mystical tradition, when we encounter darkness, we have an option by which we are held accountable: to either push it away or to transform it. The difference is the following: “When light PUSHES AWAY the darkness, eventually another darkness shall come. When the darkness itself is TRANSFORMED into light, it is a Light that no darkness can ever again oppose. It is a higher grade of Light” (Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson). The Pharoah of the Torah text not only neglects to transform his darkness into light, or even push it away, but resists it, and thus becomes further hardened by it, as a result. Again, this Pharoah part of ourselves is in truth a Divine part of ourselves but one that remains blocked and unevolved. The greater the resistance to the Moshe (Moses) liberating force within, the more we witness on ourselves strange behaviors, violent demonstrations of wrath, and crazy outbreaks of irrationality - in other words - plagues. PHAROAH’S FATE - THE LAW OF CORRECTION The universe shows us that our daily encounters in the world will persuade us to embrace our inner contradictions, challenge us to make compromises while offering us the reward of wholeness if we surrender to Reality. Like Pharoah, when we resist what we perceive as an opposition or threat to our reality, we inevitably attract and must face conflict. Like Pharoah, when we are unable to take appropriate actions, we inevitably become the victims of Life’s correction. Like Pharoah, whatever we refuse to embrace about ourselves will ultimately deprive us of our peace. G-d indeed hardens Pharoah’s heart and indeed punishes him.But G-d is not the one to blame for it. Pharoah is. The text implies that during the first five plagues, Pharoah hardened his own heart. It was not until the end of the plagues that the text changes to “G-d hardening Pharoah’s heart”. This is because although we are given free choice in this universe, it is only up to a point. In Kabbalah we have what is called, “The Law of the Vessel” or “Law of Correction” which means, the universe (Vessel) has within it a self correcting mechanism. When anything reaches an extreme, the Universe corrects it by brining it back into balance. When a body gets too cold, it shivers. When it gets too hot, it sweats. Likewise, according to the Law of the Vessel, if someone decides to do harm of their own volition, they are given free reign to do just that (which is the nature of free choice), but there’ll come a point where theirability to freely make their own wrongful moral and spiritual choices will be taken away from them, and both that person and their acts of evil will be undone. Therefore, as our Sages have taught, our Universe is comprised of a delicate balance, perfect in its own way, of both Mercy and Justice - Chesed and Gevurah. In the meantime, let us continue moving forward with honesty, humility and a willingness to be advocates for G-d’s Light. Tomorrow still holds many seas to cross, a wilderness to wander, and a Promised Land that awaits both you and I.
