Everyday Is Saturday: Help for the Suddenly Unemployed

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Terry Hadaway I recently was “unhired” by my former employer. Unhired is a softer term than “fired” but it means the same. With no warning and an immediate departure, I found myself at home enjoying the provisions of a severance package but curious about the next steps. Like most recently unhired people, I went through a range of emotions–shock, anger, grief, rebellion, self-reliant indignation, and so forth. Yet, after a few weeks I found myself wondering what day it was. For me, everyday was Saturday. That’s not a bad thing. It’s great to be able to cut the grass before it gets too hot or swim on sunny days. However, there was still a problem. Not only did I not have a job, but I wasn’t making progress toward getting a job. Something had to change. Now, I know that it is impossible to force an employer to give me a job; I can’t even force them to look at my resume! All I can do is apply, check back, and wait. That routine leads to a sense of frustration! I decided that the only person who could hire me was me! So, I applied for the job and got it… I’d be real worried if I didn’t get that job! I hired me to do some things the other me wasn’t doing. In effect, I fired the “waiting for my ship to come in” me and hired the “go kill something and drag it home” me. That led me to a new routine… a routine I’d advise any job seeker to consider. Here’s the plan: 1. Get up! I started by setting my clock to force myself to get up at the same time every morning. This put my mind in the “going to work” mode. 2. Get going! I’m one of those guys who needs a cup of coffee and a shower to get my brain functioning. In addition, I exercise every other morning. So, even though I have no specific appointments, I still go through the routine–coffee, exercise, shower–to get my mind moving toward doing something creative. 3. Get busy! Whether it is writing articles, updating my web site, or looking through the online job listings, I make it my point to get about accomplishing a task. The afternoon break is deserved only after I have accomplished something that day. 4. Get creative! Your next employment might not look like your last one–and that might be a good thing! Too many people limit their futures by the boundaries of their pasts. In my situation, I have discovered my future might be a myriad of adjunct teaching responsibilities, speaking engagements, freelance writing, and entrepreneurial activities. That’s a lot different than my corner office overlooking downtown! The cool thing is that my new experience puts me in the driver’s seat! 5. Get out! You, your spouse, your family, and your pets deserve to venture outside the privacy fence and into the world beyond. All work and no play makes everyone miserable. So make it a part of your routine to exercise some spontaneity. People who lock themselves into their rooms often suffer symptoms of depression and other problems. 6. Get determined! Waiting for someone else to rescue you from your perilous state is stressful. Take charge and use your creative energies to begin marketing your talents to the most likely customers. Who knows, you might discover that your new employer actually is staring you in the mirror! Being laid-off, fired, unhired, released, or negatively employed is traumatic. The key to survival often is a person’s motivation to turn a negative into a positive. Chances are your future will be brighter than you imagine! Rice or Rice Balls

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Vlady Peters Guards of Honour for a bride and groom have come in all sizes and shapes. There has been the one we are most used to seeing officers forming a path of honour by having their swords drawn over the heads of the bride and groom. Policemen have been known to use their truncheons, or their helmets, for the same reason. Then theres been the bridesmaids and their parasols, hockey players and their hockey sticks, and boat enthusiasts and their oars. Similarly, there have been all sorts of things that couples have been pelted with. There has been the confetti, colourful pieces of paper cut into intriguing shapes like hearts, cupids and flowers. At the moment, there are the flower petals where couples buy dozens of colourful flowers, which they subsequently strip down to petals, and, at the right moment, distribute among the guests who shower them at the end of the wedding ceremony. Then there was rice, which many couples used to colour with vegetable colours to match the bridal outfits, and have the guests pelt them with those. Rice has been a perennial favourite since the beginning of time. And instead of waiting for guests to pelt them with this most fertile grain, in some ancient rituals the bride and groom would stand in a large basket, and pelt each other with the rice provided by the guests. The grains would be caught by the baskets in which the couple stood. Not only did this symbolize the fertility and plenty for the couple, but practically speaking, once the wedding was over the couple would collect the rice and carry it to their home where they would make many meals out of it for many months to come. Instead of just raw rice, some clever bridesmaids came up with the idea of cooking rice balls. When the time came for the groom and his merry men to collect the bride, the bridesmaids would pelt them with the rice balls until the men were ready to offer them some gift worth having. At this stage the fight would end, and the groom was allowed to carry off his prize. Vlady Peters is an Australian Civil Marriage Celebrant authorized to perform marriages in Australia. A Few Tips to Make a Good Impression on an Interview

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Lanie Pambid When was the last time you did not pass a certain interview? Have you tried recalling what you told the interviewer that made him give you thumbs down? For job hunters, do you usually prepare what to answer for the undying questions that these companies ask their applicants? Let me give you an overview of my experience as an Interviewer. In 2002 until 2005, I worked as a Human Resources Assistant for a Networking Company where I handled both the Recruitment and the Benefits and Compensations of over a hundred employees. It is not easy being the Interviewer as well as being the Interviewee. Whenever I interview applicants, I use different approaches with different personalities depending on my first impression of them. For applicants who will be interviewed for non-office positions, I dont usually use the Intimidating type of Interviewer tactics because if the interviewee gets intimidated, chances are they would feel nervous, shy, taken aback, etc. thus making them reveal only a few a things about themselves. Whereas, my strategy is to make them feel comfortable around me, make them open up more by chatting with them as if we were old friends. By this way, I would really get to know some things about them. I usually ask a lot of questions that involve their inner self. Sometimes, when an interviewee becomes more comfortable than I have expected, they tend to tell me things that they shouldnt, like using drugs before or being terminated from the previous employer they worked for and when I look into their resumes, they did not include the said company. Another approach that I use is the Friendly but Strict type, by this approach, the applicants would know where they stand, in a way, they would still feel at ease, but the respect for the Interviewer is still there. I do the Initial interview for all job vacancies needed in the Company, so if they fail my interview, there wont be a second chance. My bases for passing an interviewee are proper clothes for an interview, being attentive to every detail, a little knowledge about the Company where he will be interviewed and most of all preparedness. Before an Interview, you should be prepared physically and mentally. You should wake up early, eat breakfast, etc. and be at the venue of the interview at least 30 minutes before you are to be interviewed, so that you will have time to freshen up. Make sure that your clothes are neatly pressed and you are wearing the proper clothes for the event. When answering the Interviewer, you should have eye-to-eye contact for them to see your integrity and sincerity to work for their Company. Avoid yawning or slouching on your seat, because it conveys that you are not that much interested with the job, maintain a good poise, sit up straight and smile all the time. And lastly, dont ever ask how much salary you will get at the beginning of the interview, wait for them to ask you about the salary, and dont demand for a very high salary if the salary you are asking for does not fit the position youre applying for. Getting a job is hard if you dont know what it takes to be professional enough to be hired. It is definitely not just by luck that someone lands a good job, it is because they worked hard to pass the interview, they showed the employer that they are not just good enough for the position but because they are the perfect ones for the job. What is Complete Weight Loss?

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Matt Shuebrook Complete weight loss is when each aspect of weight loss is successfully covered. In order to attain complete weight loss you need to know about each aspect of the weight loss game. The truth is weight loss is really simple, the ever so convicting truth is, weight loss is very hard. There are several areas that need to be covered when one wants to learn about complete weight loss. I am going to cover 2 very important ones here and then I will leave you with some good resources to learn about the rest of them. However the two largest factors that I know of are … We live in a world of fast food restaurants. These restaurants are attacking us through all five senses; smell, taste, sight, touch, and hearing. They are brainwashing us by use of ads, marketing campaigns, encouraging use to “super-size” any meal that we order. Studies show that the good majority of the more popular fast food chains use chemical flavoring that encourages people to buy more and eat more to satisfy their crave for the taste of their food. Most of the fast food meals that we consume contain high amounts of toxins, chemical preservatives, and lack the nutritional value in which the body needs in order to function properly. The other factor which can be highly harmful to the body is that the active levels of the mass majority of humans; especially Americans has decreased to an all time dangerous low. Well, with computers, big screen color TV’s, videogames, internet, etc. why would kids want be outside playing sports or working when they can have fun inside sitting on their butt. We have grown into a sedentary generation of workers. Things we used to go out to do, such as shopping, or socializing can now be performed by pressing a few buttons with your fingertips. Technology in the workforce is eliminating a lot of the “back-breaking” jobs, or at least making most jobs much easier to perform (don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled that we are making these technological advances). If you combine all of that with poor diets, stress from daily life, etc. you are at great risk for gaining weight. Many people eat do to boredom, sadness, and or anger. Many illnesses can lead to obesity. Such as: Hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, depression, and certain neurological problems that either slow down the metabolism or cause you to overeat. Are you tired of boring workouts, boring cardio sessions, and nasty diet food? Check out http://www.burn-fat-burn.com/ Want to Reprint this Article on How to Burn Tummy Fat? Top Tip for a Perfect Garden Makeover

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Paul Power Without a doubt, the most important thing to get right when planning any future garden makeover project is to set clear objectives. Trying to makeover a garden without clear objectives is a bit like building a house without a plan. Only a fool would undertake to build anything without a clear idea of what or how it will all look when completed. Your objectives should include some or all of the following: 1. Decide what you want to include in your new garden 2. Know what you want to get rid of/or disguise in your garden eg, that ugly rear fence needs cloaking or finally ridding yourself of that terrible shed, which blocks all your light. 3. Whether you want to increase the time youre going to spend actually working in your garden, or you want to create a garden where you work less and relax more (the low maintenance garden) All too often I come across unfinished garden makeover projects. Youve probably seen them in your own neighbourhood. Gardens dominated by unfinished patios complete with faded blue tarpaulin; pathways leading to nowhere; large mounds of compacted soil where eventually the lawn will be, and so on. The standing joke at every years barbeques is when will they get around to finishing it. Of course theres nothing funny about unfinished garden projects. Theres nothing relaxing or inspirational arriving home every day from work to be greeted by mounds of earth, overgrown weeds and building materials strewn everywhere. An unfinished garden isnt the only consequence of poor planning. It also invariably represents foolhardy spending. Remember that Saturday morning trip to the garden centre where you loaded your trolley sky-high will all sorts of plants and shrubs that you really have no idea about? Then grabbed a second trolley for those irresistible buy two get one free offers? And finally on the way out you treated yourself to an early Christmas present with that third trolley for that special Mediterranean thingy, which you thought would look great on the new patio. When finally you reach the checkout your bill is something resembling the Third World Debt, but nevertheless you smile through it all telling yourselves itll all be worth it in the end. Outside in the car park you cram and slam all your purchases into your car breaking off branches, leaves and stems as you try and squeeze it all into an impossibly small space. Back at home you start working on planting them all up, but youve failed to realise how hard the ground is. Not to mention youve hurt your back lifting that hypera-something out of the car. So its a quick tea-break and then you get caught up with the children/telly/favourite book etc and before you know it the weekends gone and all your new purchases will just have to sit it out in their pots until time allows. Unfortunately next weekend you dont have the time so you postpone planting for another week and on it goes until your shrubs are well and truly pot-bound and overgrown with all sorts of undesirable pests and start to die off. Trust me. If you havent already been there, you soon will. Unless of course you take a tip from top gardeners as to how they plan and create their gardens. Next time when you look at a beautiful garden remember that its about 1% creativity and inspiration the rest is down to great planning. So when deciding on any makeover, regardless of how small begin by setting your objectives. Decide what you want from your new garden and then agree how much youre willing to spend. Get this part right and youre far less likely to end up with something unwanted, unfinished and unloved. Lemon Law Attorneys

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Damian Sofsian Nowadays, you do not need to be stuck with a newly purchased car that has recurring problems. Almost every state has approved some type of lemon law, protecting you as a consumer from defective products. Even if you only suspect that the vehicle youve purchased could be defective, it is best that you hire an attorney to represent you. Hiring a lawyer who specializes in lemon laws during the initial stages of the problem could help you save more in the long run. These lawyers are trained to help you determine if the vehicle you purchased can be classified as a lemon or not. Technically, your newly purchased car is only considered a lemon if you have given proper attention to all of its problems, if all efforts to fix these problems have been exhausted, and if the manufacturer has been given the opportunity to try and fix the problem but cannot. You need to wait for a specified period of time and if after that period of time the problem still persists, then your lawyer can advise you to push through with your case. There are times when even if your case does not fall under the lemon law, your lawyer will be able to help you receive proper compensation by filing for a breach of warranty. Although this alternative may not garner you as much compensation as a lemon law case, you have a greater chance of success and will likely receive more than the amount stated in the warranty. Lemon Laws provides detailed information on Automobile Lemon Laws, Boat Lemon Laws, Computer Lemon Laws, Lemon Law Attorneys and more. Lemon Laws is affiliated with California Boat Lemon Law. My Experiences with Labyrinth Design

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Morgan Hamilton I recently changed my backyard’s look by completing a series of labyrinth designs. As I am well off and have a hundred acres in rural Nova Scotia, I can afford to indulge my passions. One of the things I most desire is earthworks of all types, most especially I have a thing for labyrinth designs. It probably all started with my studies of Greek myths as a child. I am referring to the story of the amazing Labyrinth designed by Daedalus to hide kind Mino’s dirty little secret, and the curse of the Theban youth, the Minotaur. I couldn’t get the idea of labyrinth designs worthy to a trap and hold such a monster out of my head. I imagined how the victims are forced into the labyrinth, being lost and not managing to find their way out, finally ending being eaten by the Minotaur. However, I had a real experience in a labyrinth with my first girlfriend once which I will never forget. Sheila and I were sixteen and she was a Wiccan as opposed to her parents’ Christian orthodoxy. One day we happened to find a book of magic and witchcraft offering labyrinth designs. That is how we started building one in the woods. Even though it is also possible to construct it with nothing but cornstarch, my girlfriend and I made our minds to cut it out of the overgrown hedges which grew down by the pond in the woods. We selected one of the more difficult labyrinth designs from the book but unfortunately didn’t manage to finish it as we ran out of shrubs long before we were done. Even though, we didn’t complete the labyrinth, it was a fun and pleasurable experience for both of us. The kinds of labyrinths which I have been constructing recently are made of more sturdy stuff. They are build of huge flagstones located some thirty miles from my home. Every single day I drive out with my truck and come back with a flatbed full of rock. Then I spend the rest of the day laying. I made up the labyrinth designs myself. The first one is done while the second is on its way, due to be finished by the summer solstice. Then I will have many friends over to get drunk and get lost in the labyrinths. They will like this experience keeping it as a precious and fun memory. Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning gardening.
